Drug Testing and Detection Periods of Commonly Abused Drugs

There are various methods to check for drug abuse by an individual. Various testing methods like urine test, saliva test, hair test, sweat test are done to identify whether or not a specific drug or metabolite (substance formed after processing in body) is present in body. The time after last drug consumption for which the drug as metabolite can be detected is called the drug detection period. The range of detection periods depend on amount and frequency of drug use, type of drug, metabolic rate, body mass, age, sex, and overall health.

The five most commonly abused drugs are Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates (Heroin, Morphine, and Codeine), Amphetamines (Amphetamine, Methamphetamine), and Phencyclidine (PCP). Misusing metabolites of all these drugs also considered as drug abuse. In addition, misusing prescription drugs like Opioids also considered as drug abuse or substance abuse.

Urine Drug Testing:
The detection period for drug abuse depends on the pH level of the urine sample. For Marijuana, it is 2-3 days for single use and 12 days for chronic abuse. For Cocaine, it is 2-4 days (it may vary if there are any kidney disorders). The detection duration for opiate drugs like Heroin, Morphine, and Codeine is 2-4 days. For Amphetamine and Methamphetamine, detection period is 2-4 days and 3-5 days respectively. For Phencyclidine (PCP), it is 7-14 days for single use and 30 days for chronic abuse.

The detection period of Cannabis is 2 to 7 days for single use and 1 to 2 years for prolonged use. For Phenobarbital and Methadone, it is 7 to 14 days and 3-5 days respectively. For Barbiturates (except Phenobarbital) and Cotinine, it is 2-3 days and 2-4 days respectively. For LSD it is 2-24 hours and for Ecstasy (MDMA) it is 1-3 days.

Hair Drug testing:
The detection period for drugs is dependent on the length of the hair sample. The detection period for Marijuana is approximately 90 days as it is less sensitive compared to other drugs. For Cocaine is upto 90 days. And for opiate drugs like Heroin, Morphine, and Codeine, it is 90 days. For Amphetamine and Methamphetamine drug detection duration is 90 days. For Phencyclidine (PCP) it is 90 days.

The detection period for Cannabis is 2 to 7 days for single use and 1 to 2 years for prolonged use. The detection duration for Phenobarbital, Barbiturates, Cotinine, and Ecstasy is up to 90 days. The substance detection time for Methadone is upto 30 days. The detection time for LSD is up to 3 days.

Saliva Drug Testing:
The detection time for Marijuana is 12-24 hours in saliva drug testing. The detection time for Cocaine is 1-3 days. For opiate drugs Heroin, Morphine it is 1-3 days. The detection time for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine is 1-3 days. The detection time for Phencyclidine (PCP) is 1-3 days. The substance detection time for Cannabis is 2 days. For Phenobarbital it is 4 to 7 days. And for Methadone it is 24 hours. The detection time for Barbiturates (except Phenobarbital) is 1-2 days. The detection time for Cotinine is 2-4 days. The detection time for LSD is 0-3 hours. And for Ecstasy (MDMA) it is 24 hours.

Teenagers and Drug Abuse

A person between the ages of 13 to 19 is called a teenager and a drug is such a substance that can change our normal body working if we have or take it. There are two types of drugs- medical drugs and non-medical drugs. Medical drugs or medicines are used to kill pains; get rid of cough; kill bacteria; cure diseases; reduce swelling or make a patient unconscious during the operation which are legal and prescribed ones by doctors.

On the contrary, non-medical narcotics are those which are taken for their non-medical effects on the mind and body. Therefore, a drug here is an illegal substance for the physical and mental effects which is put inside the body by smoking, injecting or eating. The effects of these drugs may include the stimulation or sedation (slow down) of the mind - a temporary boost to physical performance in sport, a feeling of emotional well being or in body building. The misuse of the non medical drugs is called Drug Abuse which is illegal and can cause physical and mental harm. Thus abuse of drug is non-medical use of legal or illegal drugs for physical or psychological reasons. The person who takes the illegal drug is called a druggie.

Furthermore, when a druggie takes a narcotic, the feelings and mental state exposed by him/her are often very different to that person's actual normal life behavior. Some of the illegal drugs are LSD, mescaline or Schedule I, amphetamines, cocaine, narcotics or schedule II, and heroin (hard drug). Tobacco and alcohol are also non-medical drugs. If a person starts taking these narcotics, s/he becomes a druggie and later a drug addict who cannot stop or give up using drugs.

What Constitutes Prescription Drug Abuse?

The CDC has released a report estimating that more than 1 in 5 high school students abuses legal prescription drugs. When I was in high school, I was just about the last person to hear about (and certainly follow) any trend among my peers, but I knew about drug abuse in the school, who was in rehab, where I could get drugs if I so chose, etc. I rarely heard about anything legal being abused (alcohol doesn't count because of our ages at the time.)

Here's the part I enjoy: blurring the line between my "language" category and the current events issue at hand. Does the CDC definition of abuse correlate with the dictionary definition? The verb "abuse" is defined by Dictionary.com as "use wrongly or improperly; misuse." Prescription drug abuse is defined for the purpose of the study as "having taken a prescription drug without a doctor's prescription."

I should note that I do not condone misuse of any chemical substance, legal or otherwise. I have, however, taken a prescription medication without a doctor's prescription. For years, I have had (spring) seasonal allergies. One year, a particularly bad allergic bout started while I was visiting a cousin. She gave me a dose of Zyrtec from her son's prescription, saying that I should go to my doctor and get my own prescription if it worked. The pill worked wonders, and shortly after that visit, Zyrtec became available over the counter. I've been taking it as needed ever since, all thanks to supposed "prescription drug abuse."

Drug Abuse - Much More Common Than We Might Believe

In this country the term "drug abuse" is a very often misused term. When you hear or read the term "drug abuse", what pops into your mind? Things like cocaine, heroine methamphetamines, marijuana, and crack, right? And you think of completely out of touch 'junkies' living on the streets, selling whatever they can for money, right? Or, at least the types of drugs listed here to be the 'real' drugs, right? These are the drugs that people abuse, right?

Drug abuse in the form of alcohol, nicotine, and prescription drugs is actually much more prevalent in our culture, but no one wants to talk about that. If you have a six pack in the comfort of your own home, you don't abuse drugs, right? If you smoke cigarettes, while disgusting, you're not thought of as a drug abuser are you? If you take a pill everyday, that a doctor told you that you could take, and that pill alters your 'reality' somehow, is that drug abuse?

No none of these things are considered 'drug abuse', but the reality is that they all are. Alcohol, nicotine, and prescription drugs are all just what this article is about...drugs. And if you practice any of them everyday or use them to alter your reality at all, you abuse drugs, its as simple as that. Many people don't want to admit to this, but it is the truth. When I used to smoke, I would say that I'm no different from someone who uses cocaine on a regular basis. The fact was that I abused drugs.

I obviously abused nicotine because I smoked every hour of so. I abused alcohol because I drank beer everyday. I was as much of a drug abuser as the guy who uses heroine everyday. That's the cold hard truth that most people don't want to face up to. Then when I quit both practices, and my head finally cleared up, I realized that I was engaging in both practices to escape reality in some small way. I used to say things like, "a cigarette relaxes me." Through quitting, I realized that this was a lie. And the exact same thing was true with alcohol.

Economist Dr. Martin Weitzman views on an Shared Economy

In 1984 an Economist named Martin Weitzman wrote what sould have been a world changing essay called The Shared Economy. In it Weitzman describes an economic utopia that was to be the innovative corporate structure of the 1990s. Weitzman feels that recession maybe is inevitable but that their most tragic consequence unemployment did not have to be as Weitzman states.

Meaning the layoff that came with recessions occurred because wages tended to be sticky. However I ask is are Weitzman ideas based on French socialism or Euro commuism I do not know or an concept of an co operative bussiness whereas the workers own the Company they work for hummm food for thought.Subsequently most Companies could not persuade their workers to accept lower wages in badtimes

.Unable to trim parolls companies instead laid off workers.Weitzmans feel that instead of laying someone off in bad times most companies should shared their employees hours with other employees and have their employees have top stock options during these hard time and hire more employees also to boot. Therefore for more of an decade Weitzmans ideas were hailed as brilliant by his profession However it was ingored by the wider world suddenly a more rational structure emerged in which workers had an stake in their enterprises which gained popular acceptance and now just as suddenly it is thought to be discredited why?

Look the recession of 2008 which brought about unemployement to 9% highs forcing a lot of layoffs, some feel that the Obama adminstration should pick up on Weitzmans ideas by adding stock options to employees durning down times, having 32 hours a week and hour more employees in the process instead of 40hrs at down times.Walmart and Mcdonalds most follow this concept in hiring and promoting.........

Yes could the corporate structure be controlled according to Weitzman maybe by the Government or an socialistic mandate all the above.Look according to Weitzman it could benefit the corporation by hiring more unemployed and it could benefit many groups also the disabled the Veterans from the middle East who are returning home andwere part of the Vietnam war. If you think about it Weitzman ideas could be very interesting and may make the United States an workable society in the Gobal economy hummm food for thought I say....
